A VIDEO

Short film of Times Square in NYC before it got Disneyed. Pretty interesting, especially for anyone who remembers it that way.

I worked in Times Square in the mid-1980s, before the Disneyfication, and it was actually kind of scary to walk across 42nd Street, even in the morning in broad daylight. My most terrifying moment was when a giant Cabbage Patch Kid ran after me down Broadway one day, but that’s for another post. (I also have a vague memory of being followed by a hot dog outside Nathan’s once, but I may actually have imagined that one.)

I have similar memories from around 1990 when I was an intern at New York Theater Workshop, which had offices on 42nd near 8th.
